FOR AMERICANS AT HOME IN THE WORLD

A little perspective.Wherever you call home.
Taxes & money · Filing season

October 15 is approaching. Check which tax deadline is yours.

An extension to file and an extension to pay are different things. A quick check for Americans with an extended U.S. return.

The essential point

For eligible overseas filers who requested the additional extension on time, October 15 is generally the extended filing date. Interest on unpaid tax can still run from the regular due date.

If your U.S. tax return is still on the to-do list, check the extension you actually obtained. The IRS says qualifying citizens and resident aliens abroad may receive an automatic two-month filing extension. A further extension to October 15 requires a timely request, generally using Form 4868.

More time to file does not erase interest

The IRS explains that interest on tax paid after the regular due date runs from that regular date until payment. Do not assume that a later filing date also moves every payment obligation.

A useful check before October

  • Find the confirmation of your extension request and the tax year it covers.
  • Gather the remaining income statements and information your preparer requested.
  • Ask your preparer to confirm both your filing date and any unpaid balance.

This is a general filing reminder. Special relief and individual circumstances can change the answer; confirm your own position using the IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional.
